FEE: Member: $81, Non-member: $90, Materials: $10

Register: Call the Newark Museum: 973 596 6607

This is a new workshop I developed for the Newark Museum. It is held in conjunction with the Museum exhibition African Cosmos: Stellar Arts (February 27-August 11, 2013). Read about the exhibition currently at the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art…

Workshop participants are encouraged to view the African Cosmos exhibit in person when it arrives at the Newark Museum. They will see ancient and contemporary art. At the collage workshop, we will investigate cosmic images, sun, moon and stars, signs of the Zodiac, cosmic connectors to original myths of many African cultures, patterns and symbols in African textiles. We will locate, cut and tear papers from magazines, draw, paint and embellish on various papers and paste everything into a collage. The workshop will include handouts, decorated papers, sample text and imagery for collage.

The workshop is very user friendly. We locate and repurpose magazine papers and work with everyday materials that are inexpensive and easy to find. Participants are encouraged to bring personal media to include in their collage. Workshop includes dialogue, demonstration and personal attention. I created the image nearby with painted papers and patterned magazine papers.

Fee: to be determined depending on class size and schedule.

Artists as diverse as Henri Matisse, Robert Rauschenberg and Romare Bearden all found personal expression in the art of collage. Many contemporary artists work in collage. Explore the collage artist in YOU. Learn collage technique and investigate the work of great artists through collage, drawing and painting. Learn to analyze and understand what makes great art so affective and compelling. Explore color and design. Transform found materials – old magazines, books, maps, and photos – into artistic works of rich texture and surprising beauty. Each session demonstrates a specific collage project (a modern or contemporary artist) and related techniques. Students will work with a mix of media as well as materials they bring from home.

all-day workshop: 10:00 am–4:00 pm All Levels led by Nancy Egol Nikkal

FEE: Member: $81, Non-member: $90, Materials: $10

Call the Newark Museum: 973 596 6607 to ask when this workshop will be scheduled soon.

I teach this popular workshop at the Newark Museum. The most recent session was held in conjunction with the Museum exhibition Romare Bearden: Southern Recollections (closed August 19, 2012). Read about the exhibition: http://www.newarkmuseum.org/romarebearden.html

Conjur Woman is a primary motif in Bearden’s work and conveys a deep connection with Caribbean culture and his African-American roots. The work and the workshop are about memory and narrative. I ask workshop participants to think about the powerful women in their life and create a portrait. They paint and decorate papers, add patterned papers, fabric, and magazine papers, and then cut, tear and paste everything into collage. Workshop includes dialogue, demonstration and personal attention.

The workshop is very user friendly. We locate and repurpose magazine papers and graphic images from newspapers. We work with hand-made and decorated papers. and fabric. We learn about Bearden’s focus on faces and hands, and narrative. We always add personal touches.
