the meaning of collage

This view shows my worktable with the tools I use to trace collage shapes. The first shape is large and complex. I make a simple outline drawing on tracing paper for each collage shape. The outline drawing is based on drawings in my sketchbook (which explore imagery in the current Cactus Series). Using artist's transfer paper, I transfer the outline drawing to a piece of painted paper, and hand-tear the shape along the transferred outline. I determine where it will be placed, and then glue the shape down, using white PVA glue.
