portrait can be serious or funny, introspective, outrageous and/or
provocative. You get to select the component parts that
make up the image, and you get to assemble the parts that make
the final collage. That’s the fun of collage!
Plan to embellish
the collage with purchased, found, and personal items: photos,
letters, poems, pages from books, newspapers,
magazines, fabric, lace, maps, awards, ticket stubs,
vintage postcards, game
pieces, cards, toys, ephemera, buttons, trinkets, jewelry,
etc.
The workshop
will include a review of sample portrait collages, including
historic forms. We will discuss color and design.
All sessions include demonstration on how to work with
2D and 3D
elements, and how to get them attached properly, cleanly
and evenly without
tears, folds and bubbles. All basic collage materials will be provided: papers, glue, collage
tools, paints, brushes, pen, and pencil. Participants should bring
items that relate to their subject: photos, graphic images, photocopies
(digital printouts), letters, etc.
Classes include discussion, demonstration and critique. Every
student gets individual attention.
