WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION AND MATERIALS LIST

In this workshop, a photo collage is a narrative artwork with images and words and tells a personal story about a subject.

Participants should plan their story in advance and ask the following questions: Who is my subject? Why is the subject special to me? What do I really want to say? What is the message I want to convey? The subject can be a friend or relative. The context can be a celebration, a special memory, or even a creative history, fantasy, etc.

The workshop will start with dialogue and samples of photo collage that demonstrate various storylines, materials and design techniques. Important design elements include: color, tone (light and dark), scale, movement and repetition.

The workshop will include demonstrations of how to work with a variety of 2D and 3D elements, and how to get them attached properly, cleanly, and evenly without, tears, folds and bubbles.

Participants should bring items that relate to their subject: Multiple photos and photocopies in black and white and in color and in a variety of scales (large, medium and small).

Also bring: Papers, magazines and books, letters, envelopes, note cards, postcards, lace, fabric, clothing, string, needle and thread, sewing notions (tapes, etc), pencils, pens, crayons, paints and brushes, stamps and stamp pads, block letters, stencils, press-on letters, etc. Also bring paper towels, and heavy paper, canvas or wood substrate (the backing for the photo collage).

Materials that will be provided: glues, collage tools, scissors, cutting knives, etc. There will be handouts on collage technique and materials and a bibliography of suggested books and websites on collage.
